Let’s Talk About Veganism

Just over 3 years ago I made one of the best decisions of my life. I decided to go vegan.

I know what you’re thinking, “oh please, you’re just saying that. Nothings changed.”. But let me tell you, everything has changed.

My story began in highschool when the idea of being vegan and eating anything I wanted without gaining weight was like a miracle. That’s all I cared about was the weight. Veganism never stuck for me with that mindset and I would constantly revert to eating meat. I then went to culinary school and one of our classes involved learning how to butcher animals. The entire animal. We had pigs, cows, and chickens and that is when it really began to hit me.

I grew up with a family that ate meat, hunted, and fished. I knew the process but I never took part in it myself. So once I finally did, the overwhelming feeling of guilt was too much for me. I immediately became vegetarian and a year later finally became vegan.

It all came down to ethics. I continually learned more and more about animal agriculture and modern factory farming and was horrified to learn what went on. To see the faces of the poor beings broke my heart and I refused to pay any money to such evil industries.

Since going vegan I have gotten off two hypothyroid medications, I have gotten to a healthy weight and healthy state of mind, I have learned so much more about food, cooking, ethics, and morals, and you can be sure I’ve learned how to stand up for what I believe in. I’ve learned how to always questions what I think is wrong, to listen to my gut instincts and to be more in touch with my own inner voice. I have learned patience, kindness, and compassion to all beings and I’ve learned to continue trying with everything I believe in.

And before you ask, no I don’t miss meat. Honestly, meat repulses me now. I don’t feel like I’m missing out on anything or that I’m depriving myself. Not one bit.

The only difficult thing about being vegan is honestly just listening to someone try and tell me about how eating meat is the only way to survive, how I’m lacking nutrients, and that I’m wrong to be vegan. Cool story you guys but I’m good.

So what’s your story with veganism? If you’re vegan what made you make the decision? If not, what’s holding you back? Let’s chat about it below!
